Purpose
This policy outlines the standards of respectful communication for all members of Omagh Harriers Athletic Club (the “Club”). It applies to face-to-face interactions, electronic communications (email, messaging platforms, and forums), and social media usage. By adhering to this policy, we aim to foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment for all members.
Scope
This policy applies to all Club members, volunteers, and associates when engaging in any form of communication connected to the Club’s activities.
Policy Statements
1. Respectful Interaction
- All communications should be conducted with courtesy, respect, and professionalism.
- Avoid language or behaviours that could be perceived as offensive, discriminatory, or harassing, including but not limited to comments related to race, gender, age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation.
- Avoid Passive-Aggressive Language: Members are expected to communicate directly and constructively, without resorting to indirect, passive-aggressive behaviours (e.g., backhanded compliments, sarcasm, or veiled criticism). Such communication undermines trust and can create a hostile environment.
2. Face-to-Face Communications
- Engage in active listening, allowing others to speak without interruption.
- Use constructive language, even in moments of disagreement or conflict.
- Avoid passive-aggressive behaviours such as eye-rolling, dismissive gestures, or indirect remarks.
- Resolve disputes privately and respectfully, seeking assistance from Club leaders if necessary.
3. Electronic Communications
- Keep messages clear, respectful, and relevant.
- Avoid sharing confidential or sensitive information unless authorized.
- Do not use aggressive, sarcastic, or inflammatory language.
- Be mindful of tone and phrasing to avoid the perception of passive-aggressive intent in written communications.
4. Social Media Usage
- Represent the Club positively in all posts, comments, and shared content.
- Avoid posting or sharing content that is harmful, offensive, or could bring the Club into disrepute.
- Clearly distinguish personal opinions from those of the Club when posting on personal accounts.
- Respect the privacy of other members by not sharing photos, videos, or information without their consent.
5. Zero Tolerance for Harassment or Bullying
- The Club will not tolerate any form of harassment, bullying, or intimidation in any form of communication, including passive-aggressive behavior. Breaches will be dealt with promptly and may result in disciplinary action.
Reporting and Enforcement
Members who experience or witness breaches of this policy should report concerns to the Club’s Committee or designated safeguarding officer. All reports will be handled confidentially and in accordance with the Club’s disciplinary procedures.
